Not the instrument. It's the composer. Concerto For Two Cembali.
Concerto For Strings.
Gidon Kremer doing a virtual solo concert with strings. You can't say stuff like that! It all works!!!

There are probably more violin concertos than anything else (at least famous concerti) but piano is right up there. That's probably because the violin concerto is a form that's been with us since the 1700s whereas the piano has been a more recent instrument.

'Cello is a very frequent soloist. Also you're right - flute, clar., oboe, trumpet are big. Guitar, not so popular - probably because it's so quiet compared to symphonic ins.

I think about 40%- 50% of the solos were written for Violin and / or Piano, the rest would be divided between Cello and other string instruments and of course winds, quartets, duos, etc, and exotic instruments.

Most common solo instrument for orchestra would either be piano or violin. It's definitely one of these two.

I've seen more pianists perform solo in an orchestra than any other musician, I think.
