I strongly recommend NOT buying anything in the starting zones.

If you can at all help it, don't go to the Auction Houses unless you are putting things up for sale. As another poster said, you are going to want your mounts, and saving for those should start at lvl 1.

First riding lessons at 40 run 72(?) gold, or very close to that. Epic mount riding costs 540 gold. First flying mount training at 70 cost 800 gold and the Epic flying mount training costs a whopping 5000 gold. Then there are the mounts, basic is 9g, epic land based 90g, basic flying 100g, and epic flying is 200g.

From personal experience, ie. 70 Mage, 64 Hunter, 61 Warlock, 59 Rogue, etc, ad nauseum, you can level just fine with quest rewards and found items. You won't be "teh uber leet roxxors" character, but as long as you aren't a pvp junkie where gear really does make the difference, who cares.

You don't need to but them, I'd save your money. As you kill mobs, they will drop additional bags and gear for you. You will also get gear from doing the quests.

There are auction houses in the major cities, so as soon as you're big enough to go there.. you should and check it out. You will find better stuff there than in the starter area.

NEVER buy ANYTING...

Simple enough..

Simply rely on green and blue drops/quest rewards as you level up.

Save your money because once you hit 40/60/70 you are going to want to buy the mounts.

If it does not increase your chance of survival, save your coin. If you have an over developed sense of modesty, you may want something cover your hiney with.
