O2 are sneaky and mislead thier customers, also thier customer support is awful and thier billing system is atrocious. Especially since they are now a spanish company.

Somehow O2 customers are extremely loyal (mostly becuase O2 will play havoc if you try and change network or port your number to another one)

Orange and Network 3 are the best networks in the UK, Orange becuase it has the best all round coverage, customer support and tariffs.

Network 3 becuase it has the best 3G coverage in the UK and you can get fantastic deals on huge ammounts of minutes, they also are a lot more sympathetic when it comes to billing and dont stick you with hidden VAT charges like O2.

As for the rest .... Virgin is a virtual network running off the T-mobile network, so both have awful coverage, however, T-mobile has a great price plan in the FLEXT, whereas Virgin has really REALLY bad tariffs. Vodafone is a good all rounder but quite expensive for what you get.... so
In order...
Orange
Network 3
Vodafone
T-Mobile (in 4th only becuase of the FLEXT tariff)
O2 (loses a place becuase of the hidden VAT charges)
Virgin
Others (e.g. Tesco Mobile etc.)

certainly O2 is the number 1 in UK based on:
- coverage: O2 has the strongest signal which explains why foreign mobiles roaming in UK connect to O2 network unless a manual network search
- Better value for money. You get more minutes and texts than in any other network
-reasonable prices
However if you are not a very heavy mobile user you may pay the same money to Orange or Vodafone and get free broadband internet as a reward for signing a 18 months contract.

It depends what you think makes a network better than another! Even though I aint on O2, I would recommend that network, just coz that people I know always have a signal wherever they go, especially the highlands in scotland!
