Everything everyone above said, and one other thing -

China has the technology to shoot down satellites, meaning it has the power to basically blind the U.S. in wars and all its information gathering.

If that doesn't tip the scales in a war, I don't know what will.

I have thought a lot about this during the last year. I believe they still have a very long way to go, including translating their wealth into taking care of their billions of poor citizens.
I think in a hundred years, we may be looking at another cold war. China will be the "superpower" in the East and the U.S. will remain (for a while at least) the "superpower" in the West.

Its a long ways away. At the earliest it would be 30 years. They have no Amphibious capability. They barely have a blue Navy. We need another Superpower. The world is out of balance with only one. America has gotten out of control with out the USSR pointing out our flaws. China would highly unlikely be a good superpower. THey refuse to enter into foreign conflicts directly. Unless its a bordering nation, CHina refuses to enter into conflicts directly. At best they may finance rebellions and prop up government, but dedicating troops is not their style. America is actually mad at China for not willing to send troops. We try to convince China to take part in the Afghan war, reminding them the Al Quida was funding bombings in CHina. They still refuse to fight. Frankly we should encourage CHina to stay out of wars rather than encourage them. Years latter they might send troops into a war that might not be in our best interest.

It is inevitable. They have the population, they have the resources, and they are moving rapidly into the high tech field. In a few years, Cantonese or Mandarin will be the second language in any country that wishes to do business with China.

I find it somewhat scary. They have the largest army in the world plus they have nuclear power. They can easily take any country over that they want to. So it is best to stay on China's good side.

'Tis a bit scary... Yet, I have my hopes that they will have at least become a Democracy by then. Otherwise, we can say goodbye to freedom of anything for quite some time.
