Upgrade to 801.11n, or get some MIMO (multiple in, multiple out) equipment.

You can also try not using the Microwave oven or Cordless Telephone as they use the same frequency.

Make sure you have a good signal from your wireless router.

At the end of the day, it is a TCP/IP network and if packets are being lost due to ambient impedence, this will make the network slower.

The wireless connection will always be slower compared to your normal connection. One thing to remember is as more people log on it gets even slower. Some of the suggestions you got are pretty good. Try them out.

Try logging into your router and look to see if there's a section marked "forwarding", if so click on it to expand and then check to see if UPnP is enabled, if not then enable it.

wire it up to a pylon, be sure to wear rubber gloves and rubber wellies whilst doing this!
