Calling it 'Paddy's Day' is bad enough, but Patty??? That's just a girls name! What's wrong with using the proper name, St. Patrick?

I have a friend named Patrick, we call him Pat sometimes, sometimes Patty.

It's just a nickname, I guess holiday's get them too.

While originally short for Padraic (Patrick), "Paddy" became a generic (and derogatory) name for any Irishman or Irish American way back during the the Irish Potato Famine and the resulting emmigration to the US. There were so many Irish immigrants in America that it seriously upset the job market, hence the old bigoted signage, "Irish need not apply." This attitude was also reflected in "Paddy Wagon," named such after the Irish immigrant bar brawlers and bums.

Today, the term Paddy has lost almost all its stigma and continues to be best known as a nickname for any male named Patrick or woman named Patricia (Patty).
