MA is the only state where gays can get married, but the marrying couple must be residents of the state.
NJ, VT, and CT have civil union agreements, not quite the same as marriage.
Overall, I don't care about the difference, as long as I get the equal rights that married couples have as far as taxes, estates, etc.
A little known fact is that President Clinton signed the DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) that prevents gays from filing their taxes jointly and thus prevents gays from being recognized as a union in the eyes of the Federal government.

You can get married in any state where a spiritual leader will do so, but can only be married by a governmental entity (Justice of the Peace, Judge, etc.) in Massachusetts. The marriage will not be recognized as a valid marriage by the federal government and only recognized as a valid marriage in the state of Massachusetts if accompanied by a state issued marriage license.

Only one: Massachusetts
VT and NJ have Civil Unions, which are not the same.
The Mass. Same sex marriages are restricted to Mass. & Rhode Island residents ONLY and are NOT Portable, meaning a couple who is married in Mass. and then move to another state will NOT have that marriage recognized by their new state of residence.
There are a few other states which have "Domestic Partner" registries, but again, these are not the same as Civil Unions or Marriages.

Others have already answered this, but I just wanted to point out that in Travis County (Texas) gays can get a "domestic partnership". This is as good as marriage to some insurance companies... It also gives you a certificate to hang on the wall.
