I feel guilty about everything. To my knowledge, I've never even hurt anyone before. I feel guilty about things that aren't bad in any way. I feel guilty for doing things that have made my own life worse. I feel guilty for things that make people think less of me, even if they comletely misjudged what I did. It's awful. I have no confidence because I feel so guilty. I feel like Gregor in Kafka's Metamorphosis. I'm just withering under the weight of my own guilt. I don't know what to do about it. I tell myself I haven't done anything wrong, and I just can't seem to get this awful existentialism out of my head. Please help!

I have friends who have taken women against their will, destroyed their friends' property, and manipulate others frequently. They never seem to feel guilty at all. Why can't I be like that?

Are you Catholic? I'm only kidding...but I do know how you feel. Some people have an over-active guilt complex. What it stems from, I don't know. But, I have found myself racked with guilt over insignificant little things. Perhaps you are depressed? Maybe seeing a therapist may help, or a support group. And you don't want to be like your friends, it's healthy to be concerned about other people's feelings, and losing your sweet spirit would be a sad thing. Any extremes are bad...too guilty, and not enough guilt. Try a happy medium if possible.

I doubt you would want to be like what you believe your former friends are: remorseless. You do not know if they feel guilt for their crimes. You only see the outside. Be glad that knowing you will feel guilty prevents you from doing bad things. They will have to live with themselves, and by the law of cause and effect, will likely have bad endings. As for your chronic sense of guilt, what is guilt? Fear of punishment. Perhaps you mean shame, which is a chronic sense of not being worthy. What can you do? Dispute your own conclusions. Tell yourself that you are worthy of love, and here's why: 1. I have a conscience. 2. I feel deeply. 3. I try to be a good person. 4. I have high standards for my own behavior. And so on.... Consider also that the guilt could be generalizing from one specific situation. Perhaps there is one single aspect of your life that you feel guilty about, and this feeling is expanding to encompass everything else.

Existentialism is a philosophy in which you create your own right and wrong. In your case, you make everything seem wrong. Try counseling or a 12 step program to help alleviate some of this undeserved guilt.

You aren't like your friends because they are psychopaths. Psychopaths never feel guilty about anything.

It might sound weird, but i think it all start with you being a perfectionist, in you sub-conscience you want things to be perfect even little things this is why you always feel that you could have done better..however you have to remember that nothing is perfect ..you should learn to accept the flows in things...this where you will start get rid of the guilt feeling..

I think counseling would help you. And on the other side of the coin, be grateful that you are not like your friends who can mistreat women and feel no remorse. At least you are human.
