Think of Algebra as a shorthand way of writing down a relationship so that a computation can be made:-
Example :- Speed is equal to distance divided by time - is written down using algebra (abbreviations)
V = d/t
Then depending on the observations or data available the calculation can be done.
There are lots of other abbreviations used in everyday applications.
Take a wee look at the site I have indicated.

Algebra and trigonometry (they go hand in hand) are but the first steps into a new world. These two subjects are to math what learning to read is to civilization. Don’t leave home without them. Most people cannot conceive, much less comprehend, the world they live in. They just go sailing through from birth to death almost totally ignorant of almost everything. They can’t be “bothered” to learn. However, if you master these two subjects, you will have equipped yourself to understand the world around you in a way most people never can and never will.

The point of learning algebra is just to test if you have the ability to contribute to the well being of our society by following a career in science, philosophy, medicine, engineering etc., or whether you are more suited to a job in meejah, alterntive medsin, hairdressing or perhaps being a modduw.
