I think it really depends on the fabric and on the stain. I know it works well as a pre-treatment paste to get food stains out of cotton or cotton-poly blends. And I know that it can help with a particularly dirty load (i.e. cloth napkins left over from a dinner party or the clothes that your family wore for cleaning out the garage, etc.).
However, on delicate fabrics (silk, rayon, etc.) I have found that it is actually a bit harsh and I've had some unfortunately laundry accidents as a result. Do not use it if you're washing bathing suits or anything else that is more than 10% lycra!
The chemistry behind "oxy-clean" uses enhanced oxygen molecules to help "break up"
any other molecules on the fabric (dirt) that you don't want there. Of course, this means that if it is a delicate fabric, it can also break down the fibres of the fabric itself if you use too much or if it is too concentrated within the wash water.
My best reccommedation is to use it with your whites (always) and use it sparingly as a pre-treatment for stubborn stains on your other clothes. And the exception to that rule is that it's perfectly safe for anything that is 100% polyester - that stuff is pretty indestructable from a chemical perspective (i.e. it takes a lot to break it down because it is a man-made material rather than a natural one).
Hope that helps.

Oxi clean does not work any better that any other stain remover. Check the past questions and answers. It's all a hype, and people are falling for it.

It works great. I buy gently used clothes at garage sales, and then resell them. I always use Oxiclean and it really takes any stains out, and freshens up the clothing.
