I have gone through depression and did not recieve any counseling or was on medication. Although this may not work for everyone, depending on how serious your depression is...I would say to try changing your lifestyle. Try to create a more stable environment. Keep things organized. (you have nooo idea how having this organized can actually reduce stress!)
Exercise regularly. This will produce endorphines which will naturally give you a little boost. Try to stay active, whether it be physically active, or simply doing a hobby or something you really enjoy.
Surround yourself with positive people! Sometimes the environment your around can add onto the depression and stress you are feeling....
I have pictures of loved ones surrounding me and also would write out positive, motivating quotes and place them on my mirrors, by my light switch...places where I know I will see them everyday to give me a little hope.
I would advise on you not doing this alone...talk to someone about how you are feeling. Even if they don't understand, venting and getting some of your feelings out in the open can be a huge weight off your shoulders.
Good Luck!

I am a fan of natural remedies, and have suffered from depression and sometimes anxiety for years.
There is no substitute for fitness.
Long walks on a regular basis are really helpful.
Meditation. Yoga. Working out. These are important.
Check your diet. Try going without wheat, possibly dairy. You may be surprised. Try it just for a week or something. Monitor your well being.
Be as much of a vegetarian as you can stand.
Try to eliminate junk food. If you eat chocolate, buy the best quality, you will need less anyway, and you won't regret fine chocolate.
Eat as much living food ie. sprouts and raw food as you can.
Sprouting is easy, and cheap. And you end up with just about the healthiest food there is. Food that has Life in it.
Heavily processed food, with preservatives, chemicals etc. is really dead food. One reason people get obese is because the food they eat has no real nutritional value and there are always cravings. Vitamins or whatever added to food are really just more cheap chemicals.
Buy good quality suppliments. There is a difference.
Get something spiritual going.
Read Wayne Dyer, Caroline Myss - especially her stuff on self esteem.
Get positive people and experiences in your life. Less anger/ego.
Dance. Move. Breathe deep.
Look up kundalini yoga.
ok,
I gotta go, on a public machine.
But I sincerely wish you all the best!

As someone who has battled severe depression for years, I am not surprised at the ignorance of some of the answers you have received and I am educated enough about mental health to know that it also affects smug self centred people. You can go here http://ezinearticles.com/?10-Happy-Foods:-Fight-Depression-and-Fatigue-Naturally!&id=211146 to learn about alleged 'happy foods' and also this article talks about ways to try and play the depression at its own game
Since depression is all about thoughts and feelings you can use your mind to your advantage and trick yourself out of depression. While the drugs available to tackle depression have improved over the years a third of all depressed people find that anti-depressants have little or no effect on their symptoms.
However there are other alternatives to try when it comes to helping lift depression. Behavioral therapy is now thought to be just as effective if not more so, when it comes to dealing and overcoming depression. While the symptoms of depression are felt physically by way of feeling down, sad, blue, you cry more easily and your emotions are up and down, the solution is quite simple and all in the mind.
By playing mind tricks on yourself and getting your mind to change its way of thinking, you can lift yourself right out of depression. This doesn’t of course mean that if you have been depressed and have been prescribed medication that you should ignore the advice of your Doctor and stop taking medication, but it is something that you can try alongside.
The simple answer is tricking yourself into thinking more positive thoughts and feelings. For example there is usually a reason behind the depression. While this reason is not to be trivialized it can be overcome.
If your depression stems from being in debt for example and you can see no immediate way out of your situation then every time you think about your problem you feel worse. However think about it, sometimes throughout your day you may see the light and the depression lifts by way of something unexpected which grabs your attention. Even if this is only for a few brief seconds, for those seconds your mood lifts and suddenly the world doesn’t seem like such a bad place after all.
For those brief seconds or minutes when your mind was distracted, while your problem was still there you put it to the back of your mind and let other thoughts and feelings take first place.
This is the key to tricking your mind, by consciously making it think other thoughts.
If you are severely depressed and nothing seems good in the world then visualization and imagination will do for now. This of course won’t be easy at first, but with perseverance and a little optimism it will gradually change your pattern of thought. Visualize changes in your life for the better and see yourself as escaping from the symptoms of depression and being the person that you want to be.
Be attentive to your thoughts and feelings and when you realize you have let yourself drift back into your old ways, turn to your new thoughts again. The more detail you can visualize the more real it will seem and the easier it will be to break from your depression.
You might think that this is only escaping from your problem, because after all, the problem that caused the depression in the first place is still there. That’s true, but while the problem is still there you are able to see it in a new light.
Once you have felt what it feels like to feel happy again you are then able to think not about your depression and how stuck you are but how you can deal with the problem. So play mind tricks with yourself, after your mind has been tricking you into depression for so long, its time to get your own back.

erase the word depression and its contrived meaning from your mind, now how do you feel ?
when i was growing up the word was not used very often, i feel that the word is overused these days to cover many mental states, maybe if the word wasnt there many peoples suffering would be gone.
in a nutshell "being in a depressed state" is all in the mind and it does not help when you are told you have depression, it makes the situation worse if anything.
im not saying this to sound callous or uncaring but it is up to you to pull yourself out of this hole.

Well I would say St. Johns Wart Vitamin and exercise. Exercising releases endorphins in the brain that act like a natural anti depressent. Actually any kind of physical activity that gets your heart rate up will do that.

exercise and sunshine, both are proven ways to ease depression if not helping to remove it altogether. It takes time and effort though, which makes it tough for most that are depressed. Sunshine actually creates a reaction in the body that makes you "feel good". And exercise reduces stress which helps reduce the effects of depression. ( majority of people (at least adults) that suffer from depression have high stress levels)

Don't take any pills or anything. When i'm depressed i like to do something fun. What is your favorite thing to do? I like to hang out w/ my friends. That always gets me in a good mood. Do whatever you love to do. Dig into some icecream and go catch a movie. Just have fun! Depression will be off your mind in no time!

Go do something for someone who is worse off than you. It's not hard to find others in need. Certainly it is easy to find organizations in need of volunteers willing to serve others. It is a win-win situation. Focus on the good things in your life. Are you in a wheelchair, are you in good health, are you employed? There are so many good things in most of our lives; we have to fight to be positive and focus on those good things. Advertising media are invested in us feeling empty and needy - and 'fixing' that neediness with things, rather than people. Hokey it may sound, but opening doors for others, smiling at strangers, performing "random acts of kindness" - those are the things that help make life liveable for all of us. Take 10 minutes a day and really focus - meditate if you wish to call it that - on the good things in your live. Do your parents love you? Does your cat greet you with affection every day? Has anyone smiled at you today? Focus on the positive, but get out there and DO something for someone else! :) God bless you.

Laughter. Seriously......it is a fact that laughing can help ward off depression, pain, and even diseases. So do whatever makes you laugh(preferably something that you just can't stop laughing at).

i've been pretty sad a few times. i wouldnt call it depressed, because ive never even had someone close to me die before. or even lose somebody i loved. but for me, i listen to happy music. a good song for you would be 100 years by five for fighting. it talks about how short life is. and how we should treasure it. think about what would happen if you passed. think about the people you would affect and the lives you would hurt. think about the things that are going bad in your life but keep the list short. then think about ALL of the things that are good in your life..every single thing. watch some comedy :)....and smile!
