I was scratching my head at the lack of history until I got to Zak. Of COURSE it was the Civil War decade. The country fell apart; 600,000 war dead -- far more than in all the other wars put together; U.S. cities in flames; and the assassination of a truly great president. The 1860s it is.

The Nineteen Sixties became the worst decade in American history. the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile disaster, the assassination of President Kennedy, the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King Jr, the Vietnam conflict, each and every of the conflict protesting occurring, President Johnson no longer picking to run for re-election, Civil Rights law, the moon touchdown, U-2 secret agent plane became shot down over Russia, the Beatles regarded on the Ed Sullivan instruct, and Sesame street Debuts.

WPA era of the great depression you had to actually survive then in the 1930s the was worst economic decade. The 1970s were nasty too with the stagflation, and inflationary problems, and gas lines but it did not compare to the problems of the 1930s.

I would tend to disagree. Yes, the 30s was a terrible decade. People lost their jobs and went hungry. Some even starved to death.....
But, what about the devastation of World War I -- the worst source of casualties for the U.S ever -- not to mention the rest of the world, too.
"All together, 21 million people, soldiers, and civilians, died in the four years of the war. This total would wipe out the entire states of CO, UT, WI, SD, NE, MN, ND, WY, IA, and ID."

I would go with the 1930's because it was pretty rough on almost everyone (except, of course for the few that became extremely wealthy). Of course WWI was awful, but at least when you study it in history there doesn't seem to be quite the same sense of despair and hopelessness--although that doesn't necessarily mean that it wasn't felt back then.
