Hello, John from the USA here.
You are referring to the summer games of 2012 in London, correct?
Mate, the specialness of the Summer Olympic Games cannot only be measured in money ( which it certainly can ), but it is also measured in emotion and healthy spirit of competition. It's something that's really special that has countless ways that it can be measured. It's the one and only thing that brings the whole world to their television set and keeps them on the edge of their seat. It's the one time that a usually unnoticed sport gets some attention that it deserves. And it's chance for an amateur athlete to show the world what he/she can do.
Also, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies are amazing, as well as the Parade Of Nations. I go through withdrawl after those 17 days are over because I like them so much.
True, every city is left with a debt and cleanup, as well as rigorous construction ahead of time, but that's how it is for every host, and it's worth it! Plus, seeing as how the UK hasn't gotten to host a major event ( other than Wimbledon or the British Open ) in almost 60 years, I think it's great that you get to have them.
We here in the USA can only hope we are fortunate enough to be awarded the 2016 summer games, in July of 2009.
So, even if it's not in your nature to enjoy it, just try anyway. It really is something special. And for everything special there is always a price to be paid.
John :-)

Although the Olympics seem like a money pit for the hosts, they do bring in a lot of profit from tourism as well. Also, the Olympics play a large psychological role in the world it seems as well. Nearly every TV in the world is tuned in for the opening ceremonies and throughout the competitions, rooting for their country. There is nothing better than healthy competition between countries and something to take all of our minds off of the horrible things occurring around the world for just a summer.

Canceling the Olympics would be a bad financial decision because the games bring in Millions of TOURISTS who add to the economy by
1)staying in hotels
2)eating in restaurants
3)Probably taking guided tours through museums and famous sites
Not to mention all the new jobs it creates for people.
