if they were freedom fighters, wouldn't they target the coalition soldiers, instead of civilians?

oh yea, sometimes they attack soldiers, but how often is that? 1 in 10 attacks?

It's a civil war. Even the Pentagon agrees.
Additionally, to refer to "insurgents" as if they were a monolithic block all pursuing a single goal is simplistic and incorrect. There are Sunni insurgents (both those fighting against the Americans and those fighting against the Iraqi government), Shiite insurgents (both those fighting against the U.S., against the govt., and FOR the govt.), and finally a handful of outside forces pursuing a vast array of different goals.

No, freedom doesn't seem to be in the equation. The Sunnis were in power under Saddam but they are in the minority. Now, with the new government and since there are more Shiites than Sunnis, they want the power and the Sunnis are being eradicated. The Sunnis are afraid they will be forgotten in this new government so they are fighting for power as well.
I don't believe it has to do with the religious differences between the two because there are many who are inter-married, although most of the insurgency started when the mosques were blown up.

Where is your honor as an American citizen?
You write, "oh yea, sometimes they attack soldiers, but how often is that? 1 in 10 attacks?"
Our fellow countrymen and women are dead, and the best you can say is "oh yea"?
Shame on you.

it's a civil war. the shiites and the sunnis are fighting eachother, and we are in the unenviable position of being in the middle.
the attacks done by the freedom fighters you are talking about have subsided, either they gave up, were killed, or are now part of the civil war.

It's sectarian violence, so shia attack sunni and vice versa. Sunni's and shia attack our troops as well. It's a power struggle.

They are freedom fighters because liberals believe the US are oppressors. They are fighting from our oppression. The whole thing is disgusting.
