There is a folder on my C Drive that i would like to map to drive Z. In the past i would share that folder and then it would be mappable to a drive. But if i do this then others on my network will be able to see drive z which contains private files. How can i map it without allowing access? I would rather not password protect it.

As an alternative solution, i dont mind people on my network that are in my house to have access but how to i prevent others who find my network and connect up to it from seeing the mapped drive?

If you share it with a a $ (dollar sign) after the name, it does not appear in the network neighborhood or net view (e.g. MyFolder$)

If all you want is for the folder to show up as Z:\ on that computer (no other computer needs to see it) then you can do that with the "subst" command:
subst Z: "C:\Some Path"

subst /?
gives the usage of the command that also lets you delete the Z: mapping, but this will only stay until the next time you boot, unless you create a batch file with this command in it and put it in your Startup folder.

You can password protect it. Or you can just set the permissions to only your computer.
