Call your baby's pediatrician and ask! He or she will know what's best to give your baby. Please don't take advice from anyone who is not a doctor! The same thing isn't right for every baby!

My eldest daughter (now 5), had terrible trouble passing stools as a baby. This was because she had a smaller anus than the average baby, but normal sized stools. My doctor advised me to give her aired sterile water between feeds, but she wouldn't take it, so he then advised me to put one less scoop of formula in her feeds but the same amount of water. ie, 6 scoops of milk, 7 oz of water. It did help a little as it made the stools a bit softer.
The problem sorted itself out within a few months, which was great. It meant she didn't have to have an operation.
I would speak to your doctor before altering feeds though first, all babies are different.

All babies do that, it isn't necessarly in pain, but this is a new and uncomfortable experience for them. They don't understand the feeling. It will pass as she/he gets older and starts to understand and become used to the feeling. Just hold him/her and talk gently to the baby and it will pass I promise. Now if the stool is too hard for too long, difficult to pass or bloody you need to call your doctor. They do get constipated sometimes and blood in the stool can be dangerous. If the stool is an okay texture and color, then you are fine

I would try to check out dr. sears' book The baby book or the Fussy baby book. They have suggestions for this.
I always massaged the babys belly clockwise with the baby facing me. A nice warm bath sometimes helps. And Bycycling a babies legs gets things going often.
Some one previously mentioned mylicon drops. They are a great help.

I would suggest something called Gripe Water. I have an adopted 6 month old and a foster 3 month old. They both have had that problem and their doctor suggested the Gripe Water. It says it is for gasy babies, but it helped my now 6 month old. You can get it at pharmacies, but not at Wal-Mart. Another thing would be...if you happen to be formula feeding (or I guess breastfeeding), is that your baby could have an intolerance to protein. My 3 month old does, his doctor switched him to soy, that still didn't work and now he is on Neutramagin (Spelling?) which breaks up the protein so they still get it, but it is much more gentle on their system. Hope this helps!
Oh and the Gripe Water is natural and is completely safe to give to children of any age...just follow the directions on the box.

Is your baby on formula, because it makes it a lot harder for them to poo. If you're breastfeeding, I found that the foods I ate while breastfeeding affected the baby's body. So maybe look at what you've been eating. Otherwise if you go to a naturopath they might be able to give you some drops or something to help. Good luck.

My son cried all the time when he was newborn and was trying to pass a bm. I think it's normal because they are laying down when they poop so gravity is against them. Unless there's blood in the stool, I wouldn't worry about it. Babies cry, it's their job.

my first born did the same thing, the doctor told me too use a rectal themometor and stimulate her anus muscsles with gentle circular motions and only put it in as far as u would if u were taking his/her temperature, and it worked like magic sometimes they just have trouble getting it out, which causes the pain so when he.she starts pushing try the rectal stimulation too help him/her out, works wonders sounds a little gross and or disturbing but ask u doctor about it if u feel weird or just give one try, i promice it'll work. good luck ohh or u could try fiber (metamucil)1/4 tsp at every feeding that might help too.

Are you breastfeeding? If so, it may be something in your diet that is bothering the baby. Or if you're formula feeding, she may need to be evaluated for a milk allergy and may need to be on soy or something. I would recommend talking to your pediatrician about it.
