I was born and raised in Chicago, by Wrigleyville ( nice & pretty expensive), by Fullerton & Cicero (bad area, still costly) and other areas (all pretty expensive). Now I live in Orlando 10 years and it is NOT close to expensive. You can live in great neighborhoods like Metro West and Dr. Phillips (where I currently live) for around the cost of any neighborhood in Chicago and I am talking about some of the best areas in Orlando. The pay may need some work, thats if your looking for a job in the service industry. If you are an entrepreneur, sales person or someone with a skill, you can get paid pretty good. If you can afford $1000 or so a month you can stay in a VERY nice 2 bedroom apartment in the nicest areas. Rent a house from an owner and strike it rich. I started renting my house (b4 we bought it), paying $1350 a month. I live in a gated community on the 18th hole of a golf course, I can see Universal fireworks, my land is over an acre, the house has 4 bedrooms, living room, dining room and family room, with a three car garage. I live in Dr. Phillips, one of the best neighborhoods and am loving it. If you have a family hurry up and run. I love Chicago, was there in Feb, but I will never go back to live and leave Orlando. Everyone that visits from Chicago says it is like being in movie, almost unreal. My advise look around, www.OrlandoSentinel.com and area "FREE" publications can help you out. Just look around and you will find! As far as groceries and utilities, NO they are not expensive. Gallon of milk $3.50 or so, my light bill is never higher than $300 (big house) and everything else is average. Besides there is not as much taxes as in Chicago. No city tax only state tax of about 6%. Hope you enjoy the Sunshine State as much as I do!

Orlando is cheaper than Chicago. I live near Orlando and have family in Chicago. Orlando got hit by a housing slump and if you go to www.orlando.craigslist.org you can find some cheap condos that the investors are dying to rent out, beautiful places. Also, Chicago taxes food and Florida does not. No income tax in Florida.

If Disney world means nothing to you, maybe try another town in Florida. There are, just like all states, the smaller towns that don't have as high of prices for things, rent, utilities, etc. I would reccommend if you are wanting to move to Fla unless you make alot of money, try to make sure you have 2 people bringing in some money. 1 person by themself who doesen't make very much probably won't have an easy time living there, unless you fancy holding down 5 jobs at once, and no free time.

Based on the average salary in Orlando the cost of living is in fact very expensive, or at least if you want to live in a safe and decent neighborhood. Being from Chicago, Orlando the city itself shouldnt be much of a surprise for you, you will find alot of metropolitan similarities such as increasing crime (in certain areas like Chicago) and the unbearable traffic! I highly recommend you visit the following websites for some helpfull information on Orlando:

City of Orlando (City Government)

Orange County (County Government)

Orlando Sentinel (Metropolitan Newspaper)
