Wow this is a great question. A person could be cynical about either one of these answers. Hopefully schools are as invested in both programs as they would be in either one individually. Ideally the reputations of the sports programs should complement the academics program and vice versa for the sports program. What is a travesty is those schools who recruit students for sports programs knowing that students will leave early without finishing their degree programs. Most students who participate in sports at the college level do not have the skills to go into the professional arena, so hopefully sports coaches are pushing their students to complete their programs while competing for the school.

I don't think I answered your question at all but it certainly made me think. On this particular question I believe either side could be proven using specific schools as examples.

Academics. Academics also bring in money, in the forms of grants and fellowships. And if you can't pass the classes, you won't be able to play sports.

Harvard and the other Ivies do just fine without dominating sports programs.

Not everyone can be like Stanford and be tops in both.

I would say they are equally important. Not everyone can afford to go to a "good university" and because of sports alot of those people are able to get scholarships.

Academics improves the mind, but sports improve ones
self-esteem; therefore, equally important.
