My 4-year-old daughter asked to dress her up in green for St Patrick's day today. Otherwise she will get pinched, she said. We did put a green shirt on her this morning. What's behind this "get pinched" thing? This morning she even mentioned to be spitted if not in green, but I think she made up that part.

This is a question I have not found a really good answer to, but here is my theory:

St. Patrick was said to have lead all the snakes out of Ireland. I'm going to guess that some people decided that it was because of his green (Some say green is the color of the Catholic church and St. Patrick is known for bringing the Catholic faith to Ireland) he was protected from the bites of the snakes. Therefor, if you wear green you are safe from the bites (pinches) of others.

As for spitting, I have never heard that one as a traditional thing.

It's been happening forever. All the elementary children do it. I didn't wear green once and I got pinched. It doesn't hurt. It is a playful pinch. It is for lack of proper St. Patrick's Day spirit.

Where the pinching thing came from I'm not sure, but if my daughter got spit on I'd report that to the school. It's an old tradition that is fun when you're a kid but once you get older, it's not. I'd be really uncomfortable if a stranger came up to me and pinched me. So I wear green anyway.

It's been happening since I was a kid (I'm 18.) I always just assumed it was an excuse for kids to be mean and get away with it. As for spitting, I've never heard about that. Though, young children could just tell on the spitter (or pincher, even) and get them in trouble.

college infants have all started a sprint custom of their own. They pinch classmates who do no longer placed on green in this trip. wearing green is precisely a U.S. custom, because of the fact the colour green isn't standard in eire. green is hooked as much as the previous green flag and a time whilst eire became no longer loose. green is likewise a colour linked with desire and nature.

Oh yeah, I remember in elementery school, people would pinch you if you weren't wearing green. I'm not sure of its origins though.
