The BUFFALO SABRES have the best team of commentators. They add energy and emotion to a game that is already full of both of those. It don't matter if it's the home team that scores or it's an away player who lands the big hit, each and every call is made with a passion. They always know what they are talking about when it comes to the game and they always have made me laugh when watching a game. It kills me that I can't watch them more offten down here (uncle sam sent me to texas). I mean, come on. How many NHL commentators have a dvd out about their how they call a game and how they have helped change the how the game is called. (For those who didn't know, it's called: "Top Shelf" and it's about a 45 min. movie about Rick and his life as the commentator for the Buffalo Sabres.)

On the flip side, the worst in the league have to be the team that works for versus. Every time I watch a game on that network I will turn off the sound on my tv and find the game online and listen to it that way. They never seem to know what they are talking about. If one of the teams are from a smaller market city (like Buffalo, before this season that is), they downplay everything they have done for the season, even if they are setting records or beating every team around. They are always siding with the big guys, and that's not always where you will see your best hockey players or hockey games.

Pierre Mcguire is truly the worst, unless you count Bill Clement when he's trying to ad lib or be funny.

I think the best guy in the league is actually Dan Rusanowsky who does radio play by play for the Sharks. Not flashy and no iconic catch phrases like the guys in Buffalo or Pittsburgh, but he has a good voice, he really knows the game, and his pitch and timbre really convey the excitement of the play. Radio must be infinitely more difficult than TV. Drew Remenda who does color for HNIC now used to do color for the Sharks, and I think he's great too.

But yeah... Pierre McGuire... jeez. He must have some dirt on somebody at NBC/Versus.

rick jeannerett from the buffalo sabres is probably the best commentator ever. i mean, with calls like "la la la la la lafontaine", "top shelf where mamma hides the cookies", "may day!", "stuuuuuu barnes", and "these guys are good, scary good!", how can he not be the best? he makes the game more exciting and frankly if hes not commentating, the game is not as great for me. and the worst would have to be the guys on versus cause they dont even talk about the game, they give us facts that i already i know or eitther don't care about. i like to know whats going on in the game, thank you very much.

Mike Lange, John Davidson and Gary Thorne were great...called the game as fans, not as "homers". Ripped on the team paying their salaries when it was deserved.

The Buffalo guys are horrible crybabies, and the Islanders duo are just clueless.

I can agree on Steigy maybe, but Bob Errey annoys me to no end. He picks on guys like Malkin and Whitney way too much...like Bob Errey has the slightest clue about anything more than being a 3rd/4th line energy guy...ugh.

the best: Mike Lange
"He hasn't scored since the eighth-grade picnic."
"Get in the fast lane Grandma, the bingo game's ready to roll!"
"Let's go hunt moose on a Harley"
"Never teach a pig to sing!"

the worst: whoever does the commentating for Versus. The Olympics guys weren't too good either.

Best play by play: Joe Bowen or Bob Cole
Best colour: Harry Neale...no one comes close to Harry.

Worst colour: Ray Ferraro (NBC), Bill Clement
Worst play by play: Don't have a worst really.

The best are Harry Neale and Joe Bowen. The absolute WORST is Pierre McGuire...the man NEVER SHUTS UP!...and has an opinion about EVERYTHING...whether it's asked for or not.

Best:
Mike Emrick (NJD), play by play and Darren Pang (PHX), color. Denis Potvin (FLA) is a homer, but knowledgeable.

Worst:
Too many to list, but...Isles and B's play by play (don't even know their names), Peter McNab (COL), Jim Fox (LA), Craig Laughlin (WAS) and Brian Hayward (ANH), color.

As bad as some of these guys are, Pierre MacGuire is pure horse***t of the highest order and in a league of his own.
