Take the teams that finish with the top 16 records and pair them off (regardless of conference). The team with the best record would play the team with the 16th best record, the team with the second best record would play the 15th best team (etc...kinda of like the brackets in the NCAA tournament). This way a team from the east could play a team from the west in any of the four playoff rounds (not just the NBA Finals). It would create interesting new matchups, and rivalries. It gets a little dull seeing the same teams play one another every single year in the post season. Also, by taking the top 16 teams with the best records (regardless of conference) your not allowing for say, a team that is the ninth seed in the west, not making the field, while a team thats the sixth seed in the east, but has a worse record, qualifing. I mean why punish a better team, just because the opposite conference is weaker? Also, make all the series best 3 out of 5, so that each game carries more importance

I think thats a terrible idea! Essentially you make the Conferences meaningless, you might as well not even have a Western or Eastern conference and no All Star game either.

In the early 90's you had the Pistons and Bulls rivalry you'd be taking that away from us. The hard nose style of play of the Pistons effected the way the Bulls countered. When the Knicks rose to prominence in the East they had to adapt to the physical style of play. Before you knew it the entire Eastern Conference was playing hard nose physical basketball. While out West you still had more Showtime style basketball. If you just throw everyone in together you rob the Conferences of their identities and fans of exciting rivalries. As a Mavericks fan I look forward to the NBA playoffs because I know we're on a collison course with the Spurs. I don't want to see us play the Raptors, Pacers, and Bulls in the NBA playoffs if the pairings fell that way it would flat out suck!
