Once you get your site up you need to build inbound links.
Most of the directories online charge a one time fee to review your site and add it to their index. Here are three of my favorites:

The more inbound links to your site, the better you will rank
with Yahoo / Google / MSN.
Also work on your meta tags. Here is an
article on how they work: http://www.richkahmer.com/meta-tags.html

Make sure your meta tags, these are read by the search engine crawlers daily, are intact. Since you are new, you may want to consider paying for your site's search engine submission. Just do a search, there are plenty that guarantee rankings in Google, Ask, Yahoo, AOL, etc. There is a thing called pay per click and I would stay away from those. Also, look at your website hits routinely and where they originate. There are so many sites that sometimes it pays to pay to have your site get top ranking as you probably have seen such on Google or Yahoo. The other tactic too is to have as many of your friends and yourself continually pull up the site from a link you e-mail. The more hits the better for your positioning but still not a guarantee. Make sure your website conforms to W3C standards. www.w3.org

Writing articles and submitting them to different ezines is one way. Joining forums and participating in them, using your domain name as your signature. Advertising on free advertising sites. MySpace is another good source.
With all you have a very good chance of getting your website noticed. It will take time, but keep at it and pretty soon you will get your site listed.

you need to look at the free posting sites... search for free classifieds. If you have the cash do advertising on sites that have similar target markets. Trade ad space with others who have sites already. Offer free samples or giveaways. You can even work out deals with some companies for the items, because it gets their name out there too.
Tell all your friends to talk about your site. Offer referral rewards. Be creative.
