Harvey Milk. He was an American politician and a gay rights activist in San Francisco and the city supervisor. He and the mayor were assassinated in 1978 by Dan White.
Not in the LGBT community, but do know a little about American History. Besides, I have family in the San Francisco area AND I was first to get it right!!!

Harvey Milk - The first openly gay person to be in a 'significant' position supervisor to the mayor of San Francisco.On 27 November 1978 San Francisco city supervisor Dan White shot him and the then mayor dead.

He was openly gay and got shot in 1978 along with the major, George Moscone. The man who killed them, Dan White, said that he was sugar high on Twinkies which made him "temporarily insane;" causing him to kill two people. He served less than 6 years in prison and killed himself within months of his release.
