your brakes will work just like normal brakes except your anti-lock system will be disabled and that will allow your wheels to lock up on a panic stop just as the old brake systems used to do, more than likely a wheel sensor has gone bad or a wire to one of the wheel sensors has broken.

The brakes will work like normal brakes with no ABS. It's usually just a bad wheel speed sensor that makes that light come on.

When does the light come on?
Is the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir at the correct level. if not add some sothat the level is just below the high mark.
Does the brake pedal feel squishy or go too far toward the floor?
Take it somewhere and have them "bleed" the brakes. (all four)
If the light still comes on have a pro check the electronic components of the ABS system.

only if you would like to have antilock brakes functioing. if the abs light is on, the abs is not functioning. the brakes will ALWAYS work, you just won't have antilock

absolutely, you should take it directly to your nearest qualified shop and have it looked at right away. it could mean that your abs has failed, and in a panic stop situation your brakes would possibly not work correctly. put it this way, if i slammed on my brakes, i would not want you behind me.

here are a couple sites to visit about antilock brakes

if your ABS light is on your brakes are not working correctly and can cause an accident. Please don't drive where I live until fixed!!!!
fixing them won't cost as much as an accident and increased insurance costs.
