I think even if I wasn't working, I'd need to be doing some volunteer work or something. It's in my personality to feel needed, so if I spend too much time at home with nowhere I have to be, I tend to get depressed.
Incidentally, I love my current job. My only complaint is wishing I could have more vacation time so I can do what I want when I want to.
I think finding a job that suits your interests and work style are the most important. I have a job in which I can use my interests and talents - and in an environment that I enjoy.
For example, if you're a person who likes the work environment to be quiet, don't work in a high school. If you prefer to work alone, find a field in which you don't have to do a lot of team work. If you like talking to people, find a field in which you have a lot of public contact.
The most important thing is to evaluate yourself and then try to find a job that suits you. It may take a few jobs before you really understand what you want/need. Use each job as a learning tool - see what works for you, what doesn't, etc.
(I work for a publishing company creating standardized tests - similar to the state progress tests that kids take in schools.)

I don't mind the idea of working at all. I'm very lucky that I'm doing the kind of work I enjoy - web design. What is challenging, however, are the issues I have to deal with at the office, such as diva-ish clients, loud co-workers, bad management, unrealistic deadlines...you get the picture. So yeah, I was thrilled when I first got this job (and still love the work itself), but as with anything in life, there are many factors in this equation.
I guess overall I'd rate my career as an 8 or 7 on a scale of 10 (highest). I don't do everything perfectly there, so I'm not going to blame anyone for my not having a "10." I'm hoping that given more time, we can smooth out our production process (we've made good progress lately), and maybe things will really be great.

I've been in retail for over two decades now, and love every minute of it. This truly is a job, in which no two days are the same.
I have been everything from a part time associate to a Regional Manager, overseeing 38+ locations.
Every morning that I get to go in, (notice that I didn't say "have" to go in?), is a new experience. I have more stories about customers than you can imagine. I have had fantastic customers, (in some cases following me from one company to the next), and some not so good ones. (Including the lady that yelled at me when I offered to assist her.)
You can do any job and love it. It's all up to you. You make a decision every morning that you wake up. If you decide that you are going to "take the bull by the horns", and make it a positive experience, then that's what it will be. On the other side, if you decide that you "hate sitting in this cubicle", then it will be a long day indeed.

I love my job - I am an E911 dispatcher. It really feels good to know I am contributing to saving lives. Don't get me wrong, some days I really want to call in sick and stay home ... but for the most part, I'm very happy. I work 12 hour shifts - nights/days, holidays, weekends - but hey, it works out in the end.

I'm a construction electrician. I build new schools and hospitals. I love my work. The only time I don't like going to work is when we have a poor job superintendent. He's like the leader of an orchestra. If he doesn't do things right, then everyone has a bad day.

I love my job.I work as a cafeteria manager in a grammar school, and yes it is hard work and there are times when its really rough, but I love seeing the kids, and I have gotten to know those kids from kindergarten to 6th grade all by name, (believe it or not) and there is always a "good-morning lunch lady!!!"for me and a smile from every one of them...some kids have a rough life, and if I can give them a smile for that day, or do or day something to brighten their day, it does wonders for mine!!

There are some days I like my job, and other days I HATE my job. If I did not have to work, I would not be working. I hate working. But I need to work because I need money to pay bills. I work in a casino, I do data entry.

I figure if you're going to spend 8+ hours a day at something you better enjoy it - AND be compensated accordingly
