The 1995-1996 Detroit Red Wings had 62 wins in 82 games. They also have the second highest points in a season with 131 points (montreal canadiens got 132 in 1976-77, but had less wins). Even with this amazing record during the season, Detroit lost in the semi's to Colorado, who went on to sweep Florda to win the cup.

I believe the record for most wins by a team in a single season is 63, set by the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings. They also won the Presidents Trophy that year with 131 points, which is second all-time to the 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens 132 points.

That would be the Detroit Red Wings with 62 wins in the 95-96 season. Unfortunatley they fell just short of the cup that year.
