People associate it with mentally imbalanced people too. I think the media has something to do with it. It's what gets the most coverage. It's funny how people go on about their dreams when it could very well just be useless stuff they encountered during the day.

Dream interpretation lived well past Freud. Carl Jung was a large contributor of the theories associated with dream interpretation, for example. Also, sometimes people in therapy say dream when they actually mean thought. Dream in this case is a less threatening presentation of what is gong on in their head and a way for them to see what kind of reaction the therapist will give.

You answered it. Siggie and his dream machine. People think psychologists have a dream list and a ready interpretation for every dream. They could do better in a gypsy tent. If they really need to feel there is a magic formula hidden within their dreams but they have no clue, any astrologer would be happy to give them a discount. Dreams are just a glaze of the mind when your body rests.

Well, my ears are burning so someone must be talking about me.... Dreams and free association ("say whatever comes to mind") allow the analyst to track derivatives of the repressed back to the source--the underlying conflict that is generating the anxiety that is manifesting itself in physical or emotional symptoms, or even in disturbances of thought.

Freud. Wasn't it actually the title of one of his books?
