For the composer, I think the purpose is to provide an outlet for creativity. For the listener (for me, anyway), the purpose is to change a bad mood or to enhance a good one.

The purpose of music...for the person that is writing it...art....for the person performing it....art and expression and interpretation, and for me...music speaks to my soul...I know there will be music in heaven I can't live without music.it helps me when I'm sad, happy or need motivation.

I found that music helped me through some tough times in my life. When my husband and I were having some marital problems I found Shania Twain's album "Come on Over" comforting.
