You could check out these two Yahoo Groups for VA.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sewrichmond/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MechanicsvilleASG/

You also might check to see if there are any meetups near you. http://www.meetup.com/

Other than that you can start your own group on Yahoo or MySpace or something like that.

Another good source for sewing groups/quilting groups and the like is your local fabric store. Many employees belong to groups or may know someone you can contact. Check out the independant stores, not just the JoAnn's or Michaels in your area. Depending on what sewing crafts you are interested in, there may be a guild in your area. You could also check out the back pages of any sewing magazines you've seen, sometimes they have listing of local groups by state. Some groups post information about their meetings and locations at libraries as well. Local shops are usually a good source of information, many of their customers belong to one group or another that gets together monthly/weekly.
Good luck!
