Read as much as you can. Go to the library and check out all of them (Brazelton, Sears, Penelope Leach, What to Expect series, ect) There are differing theories on everything, and you'll want to know the pros and cons as things come up. Just remember, it's ultimately the parents' decisions. But good to be able to offer advice (when asked). Also, you'll want to become familiar with developmental expectations. Since you'll be spending a lot of time with the baby, you should be able to detect any potential problems.
Infant cpr and first aid is a must, call the local hospital and register for a class asap.
Have fun! I was also a nanny for a newborn and it was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. It definitely prepared me for my own children.

A good friend of mine got me a great sleep book. I really enjoyed it and it helped a lot. As far as the essentials, it'll come with experience. Someone could tell you to do this or that but every baby is different and certain things will work while others will not. A newborn will sleep, eat and make you change their diapers quite often. The parents will also let you know what they expect of you and what they want you to do. They will also show you how they want things done too.
So enjoy this little treasure and have fun! Best of luck!

They have plenty of books and Internet site that can help but the only thing I can think of, the most important thing is go with what the baby needs not what you need. Take breaks because when a baby cries and you can't figure out why that is the most frustrating thing I have ever had to deal with. Eventually everything will become very easy and second nature, even though you are not mom.

If I were you I would take some child developement classes or go to the library and read books on Newborn care. You can also buy baby care books at BabiesRus or book stores. You can also read up on a lot of information on the interenet. Here are some great websites to look at.

usually local hospitals will have different training as far as CPR and things like that go. they should have advice for newborns. however if you think you don't know what to do don't take a chance, it's a child's life you're dealing with!
