As someone mentioned the signal loss is not down to someone high jacking your wireless signal, but to be on the safe side activate WAP which is wireless security.
Now your problem most likely lies at signal strength, there are 4 wireless strengths (G, G+, G+Mimo, N1) going up worst to best.
G has a range of 40-50 foot
G+ has a range of 50-70 foot
G+Mimo has a rang of 70-100 foot
N1 has a range of 100-150 foot depending maybe more

I have a Belkin G+ Mimo Router and its signal strength travels
90 foot through 3, 3 foot walls.
It cost me £60 from PC World in the UK.
You may chose to buy one, or if your wireless routers at the G+Mimo level I suggest getting N1 or moving your router closer. If this dose not help you may need to install hard wired cable.

If it barely work then I would suggest that you get a Linxsys wireless router. Someone piggybacking on your connection would not be the problem. It sounds like it's the modem. With the router that I am using, it is set up in the back bedroom and I can connect outside in my driveway.

Lol, if you're getting a bad signal, that has nothing to do with someone else using your signal. It just means you're getting a bad signal... Probably because you're too far from your router. Try adjusting your antenna.. I have the same problem.

It may simply be that you are too far away! You might try a hi gain wifi antenna on the upstairs PC.
