You have to keep going so that it wont hurt anymore after a while.

You have something called DOMS (Dealyed Onset Muscle Soreness) something everyone gets from the least experienced weight lifter to the common gym rat.

If you are sore do not lift. When you lift, you create microfiber tears in your muscles and this is why you are sore the day after. If you lift while sore, you will hurt your gains. You need your muscles to fully recover otherwise you won't improve that much.

When your msucles are fully healed, they will allow you to train a little longer and harder (not after every workout, but when you first start off, it might be) Therefore if you don't let your muscles repair, they will won't grow. Even if your DOMS go away, your msucles could still be teared needing reparied. Good rule of thumb, wait 48 hours AFTER your doms go away not AFTER YOUR LIFTING DAY.

make sure your diet is right and that your getting enough rest and this will help them recover faster.

If your doing full body workouts, don't do that unless your experienced. Even then, they are not ideal.

The best thing you can do is a split cycle. A good split is the push/pull/leg split. This is an example

Sunday - off
Monday - chest/triceps/shoulders/traps
Tuesday - off
Wednesday - biceps, back, forearms
Thursday - off
Friday - quads, hams, calves, traps (not a big muscle group recover fast)
Saturday - off
Sunday- begin the new cycle

You could throw cardio in their too on an off day.

With all this said, do not dertermine how good your workouts are by DOMS. I have been lifting for about 2 years now (18) and still get it. Not as much as I used to though. DOMS is something you get when you shock your muscles or train them a hard as possible. You can have your msucled conditioned really well and not get DOMS, but still grow. Just keep your eye on the mirror.

Long story short, wait until you are completly healed.

You're sore because you just started working out. Your body will eventually get used to it. Take a day off between workout to let your body recuperate. And don't push yourself so hard. Lift as much weight as you can manage for about 10 repetitions before your muscles give out. Don't jump in there and try to lift 100 pounds over your head the first day. Get a massage after the workout if you need it. It you have REAL pain, see a doctor. It may be something serious. But the key is to take it easy at first.

If you're "sore, I think that's ok. If it's "pain", that's not ok. Some soreness tells me you worked the muscle well enough to challenge it. That's good. A good option is to only work a major muscle group every other day in order to let it recover. Some folks work all their muncles one day and totally rest the next. Others break it up. They work lower body one day, upper the next. Also, anytime you are just beginning you will have more soreness. Glad you are working out!

your best bet is, before any workout...you should stretch or get on the treadmill for about 5-10 minutes....then do your workout routine...after your finished jump back on the treadmil for 5 minutes... You will have relaxed most of your muscles that you haven't used in awhile. I'm very serious this will work....the burning will not be as brutal as that day after you workout and feel like crap.....this will be different...I learned this from a guy that has been in the gym almost his whole life...he is 56 and looks like he is maybe 40....good luck and keep going, just go at a pace that you are comfortable with!!!!

This is a topic where everyone thinks they are an expert. That makes sense because everyone's body is different, and different things work for each of us. I have been lifting for about 10 years. And for me, I'm always a little sore. I mean not where I can't function or move, but my muscles are always recovering or being worked. My advice when you start is to take it easy and slow. Take enough time between workouts, and recover. Eventually you will be able to work out more and you will see results - but don't rush and injure yourself.

You Should Rest For a Few Hours Or Few Days Or Your Soreness Will Get Worse.

that means that you haven't stretched your muscles in a while. which means that soreness will be normal. you just have to stretch them more often to get rid of the soreness. because the muscles were not being stretched for a long time. and don't over-work your body-which means that you shouldn't do more exercise than what your body can handle. because that's not good either.

if you are only sore a little go workout but try to rest the muscles that are more sore to give them a break. but if you get real sore take a day off. after a day off, you should be fine to go back to it.

You should work out different groups of muscles each day and rest 1 or 2 days in between.
