I hate that people are telling you to lie! Let them know that you've decided you don't want to babysit for them anymore, and give them at least 2 weeks to find someone else.

In essence, you are quitting your job. And with quitting any job - and you most likely will resign from quite a few over the years - you need to be professional and firm. Excuses aren't always needed. That is, you can just say that you can no longer babysit. Give them a few weeks notice so that they can search for another person to replace you. Just note that they, as your "employers", have the option of saying that they won't need you any more right away. It is their choice. You do not have to give them a reason for quitting, but if they ask, you can state anything from the truth (what you wrote here is fine - they may need to hear it!) to a "white lie" (another job, too busy with school, other opportunities, need more money, etc.).

Even though this is hardly some big corporation, learning how to handle things professionally now will benefit you tremendously in the years to come. By giving them ample notice of your resignation, they have time to get a replacement. By remaining calm, yet pleasant, that will save the relationship (which is crucial as they live near by). And they may even provide you with a reference some time in the future, if needed.

Good luck!

Assuming this is a regular job, give them a week or two of notice, (in case a future client wants to call them as a reference. Too, you don't want to be trashed by them around the neighborhood.) Tell them you are making other work plans, and thanks for the work to date. No other explanation is necessary. If they press you for an answer, repeat that you are making other work plans, and that presently you can't discuss it.
Don't badmouth them to anyone else. And if a new client asks why you left their employ, you can honestly say that you were looking for a better opportunity/more time for school/for more challenging work/for a situation with older kids/fewer kids, or whatever is appropriate. Good-luck.

Maybe you should explain to the family you got accepted to another baby-sitting job in a few neighborhoods away, but you'd really like to try it out. Explain to them how you enjoyed working for their kids, but also say how sorry you are for quitting. Besides, sometimes a little white lie is the only thing you can do.....
