There can be many seen and unseen Sociological factors than give to an sociological explanation.

An explanation for alcoholism could include a number of factors: genes, addictive personality, bad environment, etc.

Some times factors might contribute to the problem but not be the sources. IE some one that suffers from alcoholism might have been beaten as a child, but the explanation is that they have an addictive personality and genes. beaten as a child isnt the source but it didnt help teach the child normality and a healthy childhood.
