OM (also called AUM)

commonly used along with the other mantra "NaMASiVaYa"

Om , according to Hindus is the sound of creation that pervades the entire universe(universes-if you are into astro-physics and know about super strings-M theory)

Om also means "That which hath No Beginning nor End", its commonly used to Yoga-Meditation as well

Frijof Carpa, the Italian Astrophysicist who wrote the world famous "Tao Of Physics", and the famous Carl Sagan talk about the Om being the basis of creation-the residue leftover from the big-bang

Friend, Gayatri is called VEDA MAATA. And the Gayatri mantram is given to a son at the age of 7 years by Child`s Father .It is called Brahmopadesam. Gayatri mnatra conains 24 Seed letters (Beejaaksharams) which are highly Powerful. The Siva Panchakshari contains One seed Letter. The Narayana Astaakshri contains one Seed letter. Rama naaamam contains 2 seed letters. Where as Gayatri Maha SEED LETTERS with Seven Aum Kaaras and the Divine Bhooh Bhuvah and Suvah etc which are Invocation to Gayatri Mata . Each letter of the Mantra is Filled with Atomic Energy like power. So we can not imagine its Power.It is that is why called Mantra Raajam. The other details another member has given.
