I'm just wondering if Jesus had a coffee mug or T-shirt that said "World's Greatest Liberal" on it.
Seriously, your question brings to mind a study that's just out in the last week or two, that fewer than one in five Americans can list all 10 commandments, nor can they name even one of the four gospels. This only begs the question of just what, exactly, are the religious Reds so up in arms about regarding morality in this society, given that, statistically, they don't know what they're talking about?
NOTE to "exprese's" above - Exactly WHAT "self-reliant tenets" of Jesus are you referring to?

The problem you are going to run into is that the term "liberal" means entirely different things depending on who is using it.
You are probably going by the dictionary definition, which is not at all related to how the Christian Right define that term.
To them (summarizing, based what I've seen), liberal means anti-Christian, atheist and communist.
Despite the fact that those have nothing to do with the dictionary definition, nor with what self-identified liberals believe. To them, liberal is about personal liberties.
But I can see why any group that wants to force everyone to follow their own religious dogma would be apposed to the concept of people choosing for themselves what to believe.

Jesus was a Jew.Yes,He was liberal compared to the Pharisees, but His brand of liberalism is absolutely nothing like the liberalism today. For example,he would not have supported gay marriage or abortion, hallmarks of the left. It's dishonest and ignorant to say that Jesus would be like the liberals of today.

Perhaps their "religion" makes it possible for them to “sin” and obtain redemption, so they don’t have to behave as well.
Another thing that strikes me is how the “red” religious states in the US are the ones with the highest divorce rates, highest teen pregnancy rates, highest crime, and highest spousal abuse. There is more unemployment, as well as higher school drop-out rates and illiteracy in the red states.
I have read many of the hardcore rightwing fundamentalists who believe the poor are poor by choice, that individual responsibility is the key to success at all levels, that children should be seen and not heard, that severe punishment is the answer to most of the ills of the world, and that war is synomymous with patriotism.
For the truly moral Christians, it’s not about reward and punishment. Not hurting other people, loving and being kind to your enemies, treating and loving others as you would like to be treated and loved, sharing, tolerance, understanding, in fact all of the teachings of Jesus, all boil down to one basic concept - love .
Is it possible to love thy neighbor while dropping bombs on them from 10,000 feet?
Is it possible to love thy neighbor while denying them the same rights that you have?
Is it possible to love thy neighbor while not living with other people in peace and concord, but instead maintaining hatred, envy, and malice towards others, instigating quarrels, brawls, and distress among others?
Love which is not accompanied by good works is not true love, but is merely lip service. That is why the Word of God says, "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:20).
