I have a 2Wire Modem/Router (HG1000), but don't have the installation CD for it. My PC, through a wireless adaptor, can connect to it - but not to the internet.

My ISP has provided me with a load of details that I apparently need - router gateway, subnet mask - and probably some that I don't need. At any rate, I can see no way of entering these to enable my PC to connect: the control panel network wizards certainly don't seem too sharp at this either.

The frustrating thing is that my PC tells me the wireless connection is excellent, yet I still cannot connect to the net! According to the downloadable user guide, I should be able to enter a URL in my browser that will let me configure my settings; however this only results in the default Internet Explorer 'cannot display this page' message.

Help! It's worth some points...

It may seem irrational, because the connection from your laptop to your router states that it is excellent, but if you have never accessed the router account via your browser before, you still need to initially connect your laptop to your modem router by ethernet cable inorder to access the modem router account via your browser...you will then be able to access it & not get page cannot be displayed, as you are doing now.
Just because the signal is good doesn't mean that you can automatically access the router wirelessly. This has to be set up first together with the settings for your ISP to connect to the net. So you need to connect initially via ethernet cable to set it up.
There is no such thing as an installation disk for your modem router. It is all set up by entering the settings in your router account when you go to it via your browser.
Once it is all set up & you can access the internet, you can unplug the ethernet cable & put it away in a drawer & connect wirelessly from then on.

Routers all require some configuration to connect to the internet. Its really not too difficult but if its the first time you have done it you may get confused.

If your PC is indeed connecting to it you should be able to complete the configuration. According to Two Wires information the routers default address is http://192.168.0.1
so open that address by simply typing it into your browser address line (IE or Firefox) should work other browsers may not.
Once the 2Wire setup page appears just follow the directions.
In most cases (unless you are DSL) the ISP will simply supply you with a DHCP address. If not enter the IP,Gateway, Subnet and DNS numbers they supplied you into the areas that ask for them. (these are basically forms to fill out) Once all that has been done just close your browser wait a couple of seconds and reopen it. You should connect!
2Wire website is at http://2wire.com/ they have a good amount of help for you.

Check and see if your 2wire modem has wireless capability. I was putting a wireless network in my house and had bought a Linksyswireless router and two network cards. No matter what I did it wouldn't work. I wound my calling my ISP and they walked me through the process. Come to find out, my 2wire modem had a wireless router built in to it and was conflicting with the Linksys. Took the LINKSYS back and got a nice backlit flexible keyboard.

Try opening a browser window and typing 192.168.1.1 into the address bar, thats generally the default ip of routers, you should get a pop up window asking for username and password, if you know those you should then be able to access a configuration page to put your isp's setting into.

if ur pc tells u wireless connection established than there is no problem between your pc and router.

problem is, ur router not able to connect with ISP so u have to configure router. for that connect using ur browser (best way to connect is using wire some time wireless is disable for configuration option). write down 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.1.2 in ur browser.

when configuration screen appear if it ask for user name and pass try admin and blank password (admin).

#after this u need to set username and password which is provided by ISP (load of detail) to connect with isp and other information (just follow wizard nd provide information)

Also try the old ipconfig....

Start > Run > CMD (enter) ipconfig /flushDNS (enter)
then
ipconfig /renew (enter) - this take a minute and will tell you whether the wireless could obtain an IP address.

If all seems well. Power-cycle the router and modem. (unplug them, wait 10 seconds and plug back in)

Allow both to boot up and see how your system responds.
