The only reason that it is illegal is that it cannot effectively be taxed. Marijuana and alcohol both have similar effects in that they both impair mental processing. Alcohol is expensive to make and takes a specific knowledge on how to make it properly, therefore it is not easily made by the common person. It is easy to collect and enforce alcohol taxes because of this.

Marijuana on the other hand, is so simple to produce that, well... a pothead can make it. If marijuana was a legal controlled substance it would be very hard to collect a large revenue from it, making it unattractive for the government to legalize.

Smoking a joint is more or less the same as smoking a cigarette with the effects of alcohol. While I personally do not smoke marijuana, I see no reason as to why it should not be legal to do so.

It would also be more beneficial to America if it was legal than opposed to staying illegal. For one it would drastically reduce the overcrowding in prisons, and reduce the amount of money we spend on marijuana related crimes. If it were legal I'm sure many people would still grow it on their own, but there would be a large market to sell to commercially, as I'm sure many people would prefer knowing for sure that it is safe and unlaced. This would also create more money for the government. The benefits of legalizing marijuana far outweigh the negatives of it.

Try living in the 417 , yes this is what the Druggies call where I live,

They flock here for it and of course they get lots and CRACK, it is the best industry if you your self don't take it.

It has been my experience that it is not what you are told by the people that want it legalized. I believe that they are not honest, they like it, yes once and again a quick puff is great.

But usually the poor person that gets into a group that uses will use it all day long as a crutch, You must realise that when they say it is ok they are not UN ADICTS they are ADICTS that are3 talking and unfgortunatly they will always be adicts evenn when they go through rehab, they are LIFERS.

Please do not legalise they are not in charge of reasonable thaught once they are hooked.

I support legalizing it because I think its a waste of money to jail people for doing it. Why should we have to pay tax dollars to send people who sit on their couch and do nothing into jail? The drug addiction rate was half what it currently is before drug prohibition began in the early 20th century. It was originally banned by the same movement that banned alcohol (How did that turn out?). Drugs are dealt by organized crime. If we legalize it and allow Wal-Mart or somebody else to undercut the drug dealers, nobody buys their drugs from the drug dealers anymore. That would also make it safer for the drug addicts (illegal alcohol of the 20s was far less safe than legal alcohol, before or since). The government could even stick a tax on it, like they do with tobacco, if they want. That'd probably give everybody else a tax cut at the expense of the druggies.

I think states should have sole controlling authority on the subject. Because there are varieties of Hemp that can't be used as marijuana and would be a good agricultural product.

Then again complete legalization would save the government an amount in the hundreds of millions. Marijuana is not that terribly dangerous as long as you don't drive while under the influence.

They won't legalize it for the same reason they'll never stop cocaine from coming across the border. They get to keep the money and the drugs and than the drugs somehow find their way back onto the streets and the same vicious circle starts again.

I am against it, but not for the common, usual reasons.
I don't want it legalized because the govamint will only screw up the growing and distribution of it, the same as they have done with alcohol and tobacco.
Do you know that it is easier and cheaper for kids to get grass on the streets that it is to get booze and cigarettes?
It is, and mainly because the govamint got involved.
The only way they will want to get involved is to get their hands on the money it generates.
More important, it should be noted that the only reason it was outlawed in the first place was so it didn't give competition to DuPont's substitute for hemp for making paper.

I do.

Weed is essentially harmless (its certainly no worse for you than Alcohol, which is legal.) If someone wants to get high in the privacy of their own home it doesn't effect society at large and shouldn't be regulated.

Also outlawing weed essentially provides a huge subsidy for organized crime. And do we really need to be tossing people in the clink for weed?

No we need to keep it illegal.Too many people would lose their jobs in the drug enforcement Industry.Looking for real criminals is too difficult.Prison guards would be in too much danger if the prisons weren't filled with non-violent offenders.

Yes, so we can tax it. It would cut out the dealers and cut down on crime.
