It's really a matter of stereotypes, I'd say.
I was the kind of guy who played in a rock band and was interested in books and film and stuff like that back in high school. You know, the kind of guy who liked to go out and get drunk, and I can tell you I liked D&D quite a bit back then, and played it with all sorts of people, not just so-called nerds.
I think that sort of game attracts different people for different reasons, and for me the attraction was the open-endedness and creative possibilites.
Some other people like the fantasy theme, some others the role-playing aspect.
It really doesn't matter what other people think about your tastes, after all, who would be playing it? Not the people who mock the "nerd hobby" and probably wouldn't have been able to play it anyway because it involves actually thinking and reading books! As I said before, it's all a matter of stereotypes and how people expect others and themselves to stick to some arbitraty set of characteristics and conducts.
I was in a band, had long hair, drank and ocassionally smoked so I should have been stupid, ignorant, not like D&D and get lousy grades, right? Nope, I liked it and not only got good grades, but actually got a college degree and a masters as well courtesy of a scholaship I got thanks to my brain. Do I still play in a band and drink myself stupid every now and then? Sure I do. Do I still play D&D? I don't, but not because I think it's nerdy or juvenile, mostly because I haven't got the time and nor do the people I know who might interest themselves in rolling the dice. We all got jobs and lives that take up most of our time, after all.

D&D is a very interesting game, and it can be quite fun if you approach it the right way, but there are two things about it that cause "nerds" to play it more than anyone else.
1. Things that are commonly liked by people who are deemed nerds are things that D&D offers. There is a lot of room for number crunching and specialization, and there is so much material to read on the game that anyone who enjoys these things will fall in love with the game. There is also a strong Fantasy environment. These are all things that are liked by the type of person who would normally be considered a nerd, but liking them doesn't nesecarrily make you a nerd. All of these things are either considered nerdy by some people, or are things that you have to do alone, which reduces the time you have for social interaction, which is the number one reason people are called nerds in high school and before.
2. there is a strong social stigma on the game itself. Because of the first issue, and because Nerds ended up playing the game more than anyone else, some people began to believe that only nerds would play this game. It then became common to equate anyone playing Dungeons and Dragons as being a nerd. Once again, the people who would decide to play a game despite social stigmas are usually those deemed as nerds. The title of "nerd" or "geek" or "dork" or whatever you want to call them had to come from somewhere, often because they did something else they enjoyed despite a social stigma. If someone is willing to do this, then they will undoubteldy be given such a title, and will not care that they have such a title, because this implies they don't care what other people think. If these people think D&D looks fun, or if their friends convince them that it is fun, then they will play it regardless of what it causes other people to think about them.
so does this mean that D&D is for nerds? almost, it appeals to hobbies that are considered nerdy, and it carries a stigma with it, but it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the game if you aren't a "nerd". all it means to be a nerd in school is that you belong to a certain group of people, this has no bearing on whether you enjoy D&D.

No, D&D is not for nerds. D&D is for people/players with an active imagination and a love of role-playing, fantasy fiction &/or science fiction.

No. Nerds have better things to do than to play D&D. A geek, maybe. A dork, definitely.
