Good question. My guess is that it is rigged to about the same degree our political system is rigged. I see a parallel between less talented people sometimes staying on Amer. Idol and less talented people sometimes getting voted into public office. And it's the same folks doing the voting. US. A good follow-up question would be "why do we the voters sometimes pick less talented people?" LOL

i've read before that it's the producers who ultimately decide who stays and who goes.
