To cover up the truth.

Sometimes lies are necessary, like when you lie to secure a job, or get an extra day for your research paper ("I'm sorry, my grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer, and my grandma is not coping well with the thought of losing another husband to lung cancer. I have done all the research and outlining, and it's almost complete, I just couldn't focus after she called. I...I don't know...").

However, many lies end up hurting either you, or those around you. Even the most well-intentioned lies end up hurting rather than helping. A long time ago (back when I was in high school) I was in denial about my sexuality. When I finally admitted to myself that I was bi, I decided not to tell anyone just yet--I would wait a bit. Unfortunately, my boyfriend at the time went snooping on my computer one day and read a bunch of my emails that I had sent to random people, asking them for advice. He flipped out, and proclaimed that I had lied to him repeatedly, and tensions are still high even now.

Lying is a habit than many people (including myself) are fairly good at. It's nothing to be proud of, but a good, well-placed lie every so often is, if need be, necessary and useful.

To cover up something they did that was wrong; to make themselves appear bigger, stronger, smarter, or richer than they are; to place the blame on another person; and a million other reasons. For every lie that is told there is a different reason and each person has their own reasons for lying. The big problem with one lie is it leads to another and another. Eventually the person starts forgetting what they said previously and end up caught in a web of lies.

To hide things about themselves that they are to embarrassed or ashamed to let others know about. I lie about how much money I spend shopping because I don't want my husband to think I have an addiction.
