I want to know if there are any retail stores/websites that still sell the FULL version of winXp home. By full I mean the version that you could put on a computer with no OS. I am looking at an iMac and need to be able to get Windows on it, too, and since they only work with XP, I need to know if I can get it and where.

Sure! There are still a few places that have a copy or two of Windows XP Home... but you may have some searching on your hands. Since the over-hyped Vista operating system came out, it seems most retailers are clearing their shelves of the old in favor of the new. You have some options, though. If you need your copy NOW, then I'd recommend grabbing your phone and calling around. CompUSA, Best Buy, Office Depot, and the like--you're bound to be able to find at least one copy lying around there, somewhere.

If you already have a valid copy of Windows XP Home, and would simply like to install it on a different computer, then you can go to Microsoft.com and purchase another serial key/license.

If you can stand waiting a few days, there's always Online vendors like Newegg.com or Tigerdirect.com. (Either of these is likely to save you a few $$ over simply walking into your neighborhood computer store and buying it.) If you have any hardware that you want to upgrade (video cards, memory, hard drives, and so on), you can always order the OEM version of XP Home along with the hardware, saving yourself even more over the retail cost of the software. Newegg will usually allow me to purchase OEM versions without adding hardware to my order, merely because I've bought hardware in the recent past through them. This is because OEM versions are ment to be installed on new computer builds--sort of like how it is if you bought a system from Dell or Gateway. If it looks like you're building a new system, you qualify for OEM.

Hope some of this helps you out!

You could also use - UBUNTU (or XUBUNTU if your computer has less than 256MB of RAM).

It's a free, reliable and up to date operating system.

You can explore it from the "LIVE CD".

It's easy to install and use. You can dual boot it with other operating systems.

Once you have it installed, you gain access to thousands of free programs created by the open source community. There is excellent support - see the WIKI starter guide, and the Linux forums.

Always back up your data before making changes to your computer.
