A database is a great way to store the historical sales/rental/money/employee data. It also, however, the best and easiest way to retrieve and organize that data.

If a video shop is using a database, they can easily pull reports and show trends based off of those reports on how sales/rentals are going, and can help the owner determine what may need to change to make things better.

Without a database, to do this same sort of analysis will require manual recovery of the receipts, organization of them, and then either a manual trend analysis or other analysis method.

Its really a question of time and effort. Is the amount of time to organize these by hand greater than the time/money it would take to get a database and application set up to do this for you.

PS. ASE > all!!! :))

-Sales analysis--what rents alot
-Who are my return customers
-Who are my ONE TIME customers--may need to target them with special offers so they return
-What types of movies do my customers like---will order more of these types as they come out so I don't go out of stock
-What movies are collecting dust----let's liquidate these

-Depending on what kind of data you are capturing, you can glean alot of information in a short amount of time. A paper or closed POS (one from which you can not export data from) system does not offer the same opportunities.
