when i bought my horsefield tortoise i was told not to give it lettuce, cucumber, tomato, and other kinds of watery fruit and veg because it's bad for it... is this true?? because i thought tortoises love stuff like that!

There are two main kinds of tortoise diet- forest and grasslands. Forest tortoises like fruits, etc., but grassland tortoises (like yours) prefer grass and hay based diets with little fruit.

The problem is that the grassland tortoise intestines are designed to handled dry, fiberous foods and it will get diarrhea if fed soft, watery foods.

As much as I know, the only reason that you would NOT feed your tortoise those vegetables is not that it's bad for it, but rather that those things should be just snacks or treats. As it is heavy in liquid and not much nutrition, (lettuce, especially), those could just spoil its appetite for healthier vegetables such as spinach, kale, carrots, etc. A horsfield's tortoise also doesn't deal well with too much sugar (like in the mentioned vegetables), so you shouldn't give it too much of it. =]

Different tortoises eat different foods.

no they do love stuff like .taht i think people think wild animals in the wild eat special foods. if we domesicated a tiger we would make tiger food. animals in the wild eat different things than theydo when domesicated

i have a tortoise that i give veggies to all the time and she loves them! i don't know what the person who told you that was thinking. my tortoises fav. is peppers & scallions...
