In a word Brodeur simply because when he finished his career he will be the leader in most goaltending categories and we call Gretzky the great one because he holds the most scoring records so too will Brodeur be known as the best goaltender ever because he will hold the most goaltending feats and records. Brodeur has had to play on a team all his career that although was always defensively sound also barely scored which meant every save he made meant alot more to the Devils as a team then any other goaltender and the number of one goal games he won attest to that fact. In addition without Brodeur in many years the devils would probably not even make the playoffs whereas the Avs would have made the playoffs even without Roy. Brodeur has also been overlooked for the Vezina until recently because people said its easier for him because the devils are a defensive team but look at the Avs at their height they had an awesome team of offensive stars that bailed out Roy when he got in trouble like Hejduk, Sakic, Tanguay, Forsberg and many others. Brodeur is the best all time because the numbers prove it.

Patrick Roy is better than Brodeur because he holds the all-time record for wins (551), and while Brodeur might be close to that, he is nowhere near as clutch as Roy was. In the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals the two goalies went head to head and in game 6 (Roy's Avs were losing the series 3-2 and the game was being played in NJ) Roy had a shutout and the Avs won (4-0) to send it to a game 7 in Denver, which they also won 3-1 to win the Cup. Also in game 4 of the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals with the Avs up 3-0 in the series the game went to 3OT and Roy had a shutout and stopped all 60 shots as the Avs won the game (1-0) and the Cup. Brodeur has won 3 Cups which is still less than Roy's 4, but every single year Brodeur has been good he has had an all-star defense in front of him and the Devils have always been a D-first team which is a big reason why he is so good. Oh, and I forgot to mention that Roy also has the most Conn Smythe trophies (MVP in the playoffs) of any goalie or player ever with 3 which proves just how clutch he is. Sure people are going to argue that Roy's last 2 seasons were complete meltdowns, but I can guarantee you that Brodeur's last two seasons are going to be even worse. At least Roy retired a starter. Goalies usually don't finish their careers well at all.

I agree with most of the people on here and say Brodeur but I'm not going to explain it in the same way as most others because I disagree with a lot of what they say. redwingnut16 said that Roy had bigger equipment. In 85-86 when Roy was a rookie and won the cup with Montreal (a team that arguably should not have been there) his equipment was smaller than anything Brodeur has ever won in his life. Everyone that says Roy had a better team in front of him, if by better you mean more explosive and exciting? You can argue that his team was better "but" because of this Roy has faced a lot more rubber than Brodeur, the Devils have always had a defense first attitude and a lot of games Brodeur faces only 20 shots, there aren't to many night that Roy faced only 20 shots in a game, I would have to say he earned more of his shutouts than Brodeur has. Roy also has 3 Conn Smythe trophys to Brodeurs 0 (Lemieux, Stevens, Giguere won when N.J. won the cup). Roy has 3 Vezina's to Brodeurs 2 (his 3rd will be this year). I do however agree that Brodeur is better, he will hold all of the major goaltending records (wins, shutouts etc.), he is always on his game. If the Devils lose it is rarely if ever his fault, whereas you could rattle Roy's chains a bit. Not to say that having fire in your belly is bad but Roy definitely got knocked off of his game on more than one occasion, have you ever seen Brodeur off of his game? I don't think there is a more calm and cool guy in the game. You never see the Devils worried about a 3 on 2 or 2 on 1 going the other way because .924 percent of the time Brodeur is going to make the save. The guy is 35 years old, he has so many good years left in him, he is going to destroy those records.

Brodeur by a wide margin.

He won three Stanley Cups in less time than Roy did.

He is more athletic and skilled than Roy ever was.

He is going to break Terry Sawchuk's record for the most shut outs in a career--103. He'll probably do it next season.
That is a record that all the time Roy was playing and all the records he was setting the media said Roy would never break that record nor would any other goalie, that record would always stand.

Roy ALWAYS had a good team in front of him, when he was with Montreal and with Colorado. Everyone said Brodeur was good only because of the defencemen in front of him. Well, Stevens and Niedemayer are no longer there and Brodeur is still going strong.

Hmmm, a tough choice. I think Brodeur is more consistent than Roy, but Roy at the top of his game could get pelted with rubber all game long and give up nothing. when he was on his game no one was better. Also, I think Broduer has played for teams that are better defensively than Roy did.

Forced to pick? I'd take Brodeur, much better with the stick than Roy (his achilles heel), and overall more consistent.

Brodeur because Roy always used extra large equipment large jerseys, pads, glove, blocker etc...and I feel he retired because he could never keep his numbers up with the rule change to smaller equipment. He could never handle being only second best to anyone he had a head as large as his equipment HUGE.Besides the fact he was a Punk who got beat up by two of the smallest men in Hockey at the time 2yrs.in a row (Vernon & Osgood).Broduer had and always will have a more consistant record.

Roy! Over sized equipment? Did you see what he was wearing in 86? Roy won 2 Cup for the Habs single handedly. Brodeur is one of my favourites, but until he retires with better stats, Roy is numero Uno. Oh yeah 3 ConnSmythe trophies in 3 different decades - never been done - may never be repeated.

I would give the edge to Brodeur, I think that especially when he was in Colorado that the Av's had better teams in front of him. The Devils had nothing like Forsberg and Sakic in front of him. I would say that Lamarillo is the best GM in hockey and knows how to build a team , but you could make the argument that Roy was not even the best player on his team , without a doubt Brodeur was.

Statistically the answer is Brodeur, hands down......but for me the question becomes who do you want in net for the biggest of games and during the 90s there was no other netminder as good in big games as Roy.... I guess the answer comes down to this: Do you want a regular season phenom or someone who plays big in the playoffs and can carry your team to the Cup ??

Brodeur! Don't get me wrong, I like Roy too during his prime but throughout his career, Marty has been very consistant. He's the main reason why the Devils has been dominiant since he joined the team in '94. Roy, though amazing too, has been up and down.
