A first grader really needs one-on-one. Contact the reading specialist at his school for help that you can give him or special programs he may qualify for at school.

And don't forget read to him every chance you get..

The suggestions given by the others are all great. Reading daily with and to your child is essential. The reading specialist can also help you a great deal.

However, I have seen that no one has suggested that you practice sight words with your child. Ask your child's teacher for a list of sight words. Make flashcards and study them with your child. I was told by a reading professor that if a child learns their sight words they will be able to read 70% of what they come across.

Also, It is important to study the alphabet, letter names and of course most importantly letter sounds. When you read with your child model how they should be sounding out letters. You sound out one letter at a time, and when done sounding out letters in a word y ou say the word quickly.
