"Someone" contains subgroups of "strangers" and "intimates" (and others). Intimates tend to look each other in the eye, while strangers tend not to look each other in the eye. Male wolves fight if they look each other in the eye, as that is interpreted as a challenge. Males convey desire or aggression with a look. Those who look people in the eye have been trained to do so--it's not a natural response. As for myself, I would look someone in the eye if I did not trust them or if I desired intimacy. For strangers, probably a general view of the face with glances away.

Since I live in Mexico but I'm an american, I look at the mouth. This helps me understand what the person is saying.

I like to look up girls' skirts whenever possible. I'll also look down the cleavage in their blouses when they bend over.

If the person has a special feature (such as huge breasts or is naked) I will look at that part of the body.

I look in their eyes if it someone I am comfortable with. If it someone I just met, don't know, or someone I just don't care for that much I tend to avoid looking at their eyes... then it is the mouth(or shoulder area... I'm short lol) or away from them all together.

As a sign of respect, always look in a persons eyes.

It depends on who I'm talking to, what we're talking about, and what the circumstances are.

If I'm talking to my children, I pretty much always look them in the face. More specifically, I'm looking at their mouths. One of my kids had trouble learning to use words, so we did a lot of pointing to our mouths when we were talking to remind him to use his words.

If I'm talking to my boss, I look him in the eyes.

If I'm talking to my husband, I usually look him in the eyes, but a lot of the time, if I'm distracted, I'm looking away (driving, kids, cooking, on the computer, watching tv, you get the picture)

If I'm having a serious discussion, though, I look him in the face. But not 100% in the eyes, because it can be creepy to not look off occasionally. :-)
