No doubt the brains behind this "enterprise" no pun included, because after he died she has developed many more of his ideas not just star trek. Riker was the only other first officer to be called #1 an inside joke.

It was Capt. Christopher Pike.
During the pilot of "Star Trek" he was played by Jeffrey Hunter, but in the episode "The Menagerie" in which Spock took a crippled Pike back to the planet Talos IV so that he could live out his life in a mental illusion of health, he was played by Sean Kenney because Hunter was not available.

yes, you are correct, it was Capt Christopher Pike played by Jeffery Hunter, in the pilot episode only, then Capt Kirk. Pike returned a two-part episode in a wheel chair and injured, they showed scenes from the pilot..
and spock was a little different in that 1st ep.
