This infant has terrible cradle cap. Thanks, ( to the nurse), for the info, gosh...I never knew that it could be treated for good with dandruff shampoo!

Cradle cap, or seborrheic dermatitis, occurs in most infants during the first few months of life. It is a crusty, oily build up that appears on the scalp, with an underlying redness and irritation. It can extend down onto the face, the neck, and the upper chest. It is analogous to adult dandruff. It is thought to be caused by a combination of oily skin, hormonal effects, and occasionally fungus growth. It can fluctuate in severity from day to day, sometimes appearing mild, and sometimes flaring up into angry, red, bumps and pimples.

Treating cradle cap - for the scalp and eyebrows, you can massage in olive oil or baby oil, then gently comb or brush out the flakes. This isn't a cure, however, and the crusts generally keep building back up again for the whole first year of life. You can get rid of cradle cap once and for all using dandruff shampoo (either a selenium or a tar based shampoo is fine) twice a week for several weeks. You can decrease the frequency as the condition improves. You may need to use it once a month or so to keep the "dandruff" away.

Treating seborrhea on the face and skin - you can use an over-the-counter extra-strength hydrocortisone cream once or twice a day for several days at a time to minimize the rash. This isn't a cure, however. It will just keep it in check until the condition naturally goes away.

How To Fix Cradle Cap

well you can start off with baby oil, or baby oil gel,(the gel has vitamin E and aloe vera, better for the skin) which can be found with the wipes and such. Use a soft bristle baby brush and just gently 3-4 times a day, rub it in the scalp with the brush. (be very careful of the soft spot) When you bathe the baby, avoid soaps on the scalp. If this doesn't help after a week or so, take the baby to the doctor, they have medicated soaps and lotions. I had to use them on my third son, his was so bad, it looked like it was painful it was so bad. Good luck

This is what worked for us- massage baby oil into his hair really well and then comb it out with a really fine toothed comb. Just make sure you wash their hair with baby shampoo to get all the oil out. After we did this a couple times it didn't come back anymore!

soak the scalp with baby oil for a day then reapply the oil and massage in with wet wash cloth and then shampoo as normal.
Also, only cover the baby's head when it needs to wear a hat.

You can put a little mild baby lotion or baby oil on the scalp to help soften it up. It will eventually go away on it's on after 2 months or so. The lotion or baby oil will help speed things a long. I used Johnson and Johnson's baby lotion and that seemed to help some. It smelled better and wasn't so greesy. Congrats on your new bundle!

When you give your baby a bath put a small amount of baby shampoo or baby oil on his/her scalp and take a baby brush and rub gently in a circular motion. Do this everytime you give your baby a bath and this should help. It worked for my baby.

Just apply a little bit of baby oil daily & it will loosen it. Be careful not to rub the soft spot too hard while rubbing oil on it.
