How about analogizing, using, say, a motorist instead of an electron? The motorist leaves the parking lot (cell), travels on the highway (wire) to the drawbridge (switch), passes with some difficulty through a construction section where the road necks down from 6-lane to 1-lane (a resistance, like a light bulb) and returns to the parking lot (completing the circuit to the cell). A better analogy, you could make it a roller coaster, with the cell being the lifting section at the start of the ride.
Of course it's up to your creativity to make it interesting, and have it sound like something a newspaper would devote space to. (Such as a huge traffic jam caused by the construction.)
